Investing in Oneself

Around the world, millions of youths spend copious amounts of time and money with the intent to “better themselves.” Scrambling to build resumes, network and gain intern experience, many are hopeful that an internship opportunity will eventually lead to a successful future. However, this belief does not always hold true, as individuals are stuck in a perpetual intern state. It is also important to present the counter argument presented in the existing literature.  Thus, some intern work is based in educational training programs and does not substitute the work of regular employees. However, such requirements are unclear and inconsistent. Companies need to be better, and more objectively evaluated on their intern programs. Similarly, such methodization fails to account for the intern’s financial state. There is much inconsistency related to the unpaid internship experience. To assess such disparity, the government must explore the stakes among students, employers and academic institutions.
